How will the new homes market fare in 2023?

Born in 1896, Walling was famous for designing several well-known homes and gardens including Dame Nellie Melba’s Coldstream abode and the Cruden Farm garden for Dame Elisabeth Murdoch.

The Victorian Heritage-listed Braemark featured in Walling’s 1947 book Cottage and Garden in Australia.

She wrote about its stone chimneys, “ledge and brace” doors, exposed beams, colonial windows and feature bay window.

Braemark is located in the National Trust-classified Bickleigh Vale Estate which Walling designed based on an English village.

Walling was born in Yorkshire and when she was a teenager, her family emigrated to New Zealand, and then later Australia.

She studied a certificate in horticulture at Burnley College and became a gardener, opening a landscape design practice in the 1920s.

Dubbed “Australia’s first woman land developer”, she began developing Bickleigh Vale in the 1920s.

The first cottage to be built, named after the village of Sonning near the Thames in England, became her own home although it later burned down and was reconstructed.

Walling worked across several Australian states and became an advocate for roadside vegetation and conservation, in addition to a prolific writer.

Professionals Methven Group Mooroolbark sales manager Jim Dunkley has the listing.

The property is sale via expressions of interest closing at 4pm on February 15.
